Reflections

Saturday 16 December sees the start of the second half of the season. We’ve now played and got the measure of all the teams in our league. The table shows that we are third from bottom with 3 wins from 11 played. Our wins have come against the teams around us. We have had closely fought matches with then teams in the middle third and suffered the big defeats against the two teams at the top.

There have been games where mistakes have cost us dear. there have been games where the performance has deserved more. There have been below par performances where we got exactly what we deserved. We’ve had an abandoned match (Although the result has now been resolved and rightly awarded to Ashford). We’ve had the equivalent of whole team despatched to Kosovo by the MOD, some of our talented youngsters have headed off to Uni in various parts of the Country. We’ve had a new coaching set-up on more than one occasion. But do you know what, we’ve just got on with it in the Charlton Park tradition. One thing is for sure, even though we haven’t had a settled side, every player that has put on the Charlton Park jersey has given their all and not let the club down.

This Saturday we take on our old friends from down the road, Dartfordians. And we’ll give a warm Charlton Park welcome to its players, officials and supporters. It sounds like many of them will be in attendance at the VP Christmas lunch. They’re having a pretty solid season so far and sit second in the table with a playing record of won 9 lost 2. Back in September just after they’d beaten us, I boldly predicted they’d be the team to beat. The following week, they promptly went and lost to Crowborough. The other loss came at the hands of Canterbury Pilgrims. To be fair, everyone has lost Canterbury so far.

Our Opponents

Last time out they defeated a resilient Deal and Betteshanger side 29-7 but suffered a couple of injuries to key players in the process. Johnny Regnier suffered a hamstring injury. Whilst hooker Jack Hooban received a head injury and both players may be considered a doubt for the match.
